There is nothing as rewarding than to discover a great antique bargain. But to do so, you have to know not only where to find them, but you also need to know value when you see it. While recognizing value that takes some experience, anyone can learn to find antiques in order to develop that needed experience. Let us discuss some places where we can look for them.
Bargains of all kinds can be found at auctions. While antiques can be found at many auctions, not all auctions have them. Look for auction postings at antique shops as these are the best sources for antiques. Farms are great sources for finding some bargains and estate auctions are also good as family members will be eager to liquidate belongings in order to settle the estate.
You must go to the site before the auction in order to look over the items and examine them. Until you can learn to recognize bargains, it is best to just go to some of them and only observe. But if there is something you want to bid on, you will want to check it out first. Do not appear too excited or interested as this will get you the best price.
Another excellent source for collectibles are antique shops. However, keep in mind that a shop that sells antiques may ask too much for an item. In any event, it is not a bad idea to get acquainted with some of the dealers. They may share some of their sources with you. Many of them get some of their stuff from local junk dealers.
When you go into some of these shops, you should have a specific price in mind. Dealers would rather spend time with someone who is serious, than a person who is just passing the time. It is not a bad idea to check with your local chamber of commerce about some dealers in your area and inquire as to their reputation and business dealings. Also, you can get an idea how long they have been in business.
Want ads can be an excellent source for antiques, but this usually requires some patience. You will often be misled by the description. Always call and ask about the age, description, and price of an item ahead of time. This way, you will get an idea of what the seller thinks and what you may be getting into.
If the antique is expensive, then you may want to take an appraiser with you. It might cost you a few bucks, but it could be well worth the money and save you big time in the long run. Perhaps take along a good friend to help you assess its values. This is another reason to befriend a few dealers, maybe you could make one of them a partner on the purchase.
Finally, you have the most adventurous source for antiques, salvage yards and junk shops. These can be very exciting because you just do not ever know what you will find at these places. If you remain open minded, junk often brings you the biggest rewards of all.
