Mattresses were not always made out of the space age materials they are today. In fact, at one point they were exclusively stuffed with organic matter like straw, leaves or even Spanish moss. Well, these things had bugs living in them. Luckily we also have new ways to rid our beds of these pests like bed bug spray.

Mattresses were not always made out of the space age materials they are today. In fact, at one point they were exclusively stuffed with organic matter like straw, leaves or even Spanish moss. Well, these things had bugs living in them. Luckily we also have new ways to rid our beds of these pests like bed bug spray.

Unfortunately, bed bugs still inhabit our homes, even though we no longer stuff our mattresses with foliage and the like. They not only live in beds but inhabit all kinds of places in our houses. People still say "Don't let the Bedbug bite" when they go to sleep.

Bed bugs live off blood. Some varieties prefer animal blood like chickens or domestic animals. Others like the Common Bed Bug, Cimex Lectularius feed on human blood. They are, for the most part, nocturnal creatures so you won't usually see them. They stay near their food, feed a few times a week or even month and then go back to hiding in a dark, warm place. Since your bed's mattress is dark and warm, it is a perfect place for them to hide. And, since you are their food, they like to hide near where you sleep. Don't worry about the bites because, although they can cause itchy rashes, they are not dangerous.

Bed bugs can enter your home in numerous ways. Others people can carry them in and animals can bring them. They can travel from nearby places or you can get them on your clothes from old furniture or a hotel stay. Keeping your home clean is a good way to keep bed bugs away but it is not foolproof.

There is a chance you get bed bugs and you never find out. Since some people are not allergic to the bite, unless you are or someone who sleeps in your bed is, they could go unnoticed. There is also the chance that a bed bug bite will be misdiagnosed as some other skin irritation. Bed bugs do leave things like feces or extra and you can confirm their presence if you see these things.

Other ways to detect bed bugs include using tape around your bed and on your bed to catch them when they come out. They like to bite an hour or so before sunrise so, if you wake up and don't move too much, you may be able to actually see them with a flashlight.

There are various ways to protect yourself from being bitten and to rid your home of bedbugs. You can use tape as mentioned above to catch them. You can put a mattress cover on your bed, which covers the whole mattress. They will no longer be able to get out and feed and they will die. You can call an exterminator or you can purchase a bed bug spray or dust.

There are many different brands of bed bug spray. They can be purchased online or at retailers like Wal-Mart, Target or Home Depot. They range in prince from as low as $6 up to $65. If you have bedbugs or even if you think you may, get a good spray and mattress cover. This way you can kill them off and prevent them from returning.
