The primary step to be taken before getting started with landscaping is the analysis of following parameters to spot the right option that is available. First and foremost is your place and the climatic conditions of that place. The other important parameters include the amount of land that is available to you, amount of money you are willing to invest, amount of time you would like to spend and finally the plan of your house and its natural features.
There's definitely no dearth of landscaping ideas. From building a pond, to creating a spring, winter or summer landscapes; from bringing to life a garden bursting with color to planning a well designed vegetable patch, you most definitely won't want for ideas. However, the impossible ideas will have to be weeded out on the basis of the above mentioned considerations - climate, location, space, etc.

If the location does not support the plant you have selected to grow then the purpose is not served and you end up losing your money and time. Shrubs and trees require sunlight to grow and if you place them in a place where you don't receive much sunlight the plants die and you will lose your money.
To be successful in landscaping you should have some idea about plants and their requirements. If you are a tyro then it is better you choose plants that require minimum care and maintenance.
Depending on the size of the land available you should decide if you can plant trees or not. A large house with a big garden definitely needs a tree to make it look good and it is better to avoid planting trees in a small area.
Plants and trees should be given enough space to spread their roots and hence they should not be planted very close to your house. The location chosen should be appropriate for the plants to grow or it will lead to few problems. For example, if a shrub is planted near a swampy region it remains moist throughout. This is not a favourable condition for the plants to grow.
Maintaining your garden after planting the shrubs and trees is very important. Shrubs that are planted near windows should be pruned regularly to maintain the height. Watering the plants is very essential and certain plants require fertilizers to grow. So people who don't have much time to do all these should choose plants that can grow easily without any special steps involved.
