Snow skiing is considered not just a sport, but a group of sports. Equipment includes, but is not limited to, skis, boots, and bindings that attach the boots to the skis. It is generally thought that skiing is divided into two categories ' Nordic and Alpine.

Nordic consists of such types as ski jumping, cross-country, and Telemark skiing. Nordic traces its beginnings to Sweden and Norway and was the first type. The boot bindings for Nordic attach to the toes of a skier's boots. There is no binding for the heels.

However, Alpine is different. Tracing its roots to the Alps of Europe and also known as downhill, the bindings attach differently. They fasten to both the toes and heels of the skier's boots.

Alpine freestyle, freestyle, and freeskiing are all considered to be varying parts of Alpine. For the most part, these types of skiing involve using aerial acrobatics and maintaining balance.

An upgrade from these is freestyle, which makes use of tricks and stunts in their aerial escapades. Skiers of this discipline can practice their tricks in terrain parks, areas built outdoors that are similar to skateboard parks.

Freeriding, known also as freeskiing, is an offshoot of freestyle. There is a major difference, however. Freeriders, instead of using terrain parks, opt to use natural open spaces such as isolated backcountry spots and mountainsides. Freeriders also use cliffs or natural runs to make their experiences even better.

As mentioned, Nordic is also called cross-country. There is no course or run needed. Everywhere is able to be traveled. In fact, this sport is derived from what many years ago was merely a form of winter travel. Up, down, and flat are all parts of this endeavor.

Freestyle cross-country entails using any technique to travel on skis as long as it is powered only by a person. Classic cross-country is different in that any skating action is not allowed to power the travel on skis.

Ski competitions have enjoyed great popularity over the years. Especially popular, though, are Nordic jumping, slalom racing, and downhill racing. Downhill is a race to a given finish line straight down a mountain. It is timed and the winner is whoever skis fastest.

Slalom racing is not too dissimilar. Skiers race downhill as fast as possible. However, the difference is that skiers must pass through a series of gates, known as slaloms, on the way down to the finish line. Each gate has one red pole and one blue pole and racers must pass between each colored pole that constitutes a gate.

Nordic jumping is racing quickly down a ramp, then soaring through the air. Jumpers must travel in the air as far as possible until they land back on the ground. It is a very popular Olympic sport and requires no poles be used.

Of course, most believe snow is necessary for snow skiing. But not for dry slope skiing. Skiers ski on dry downhill land. Actually, it's not so much dry as it is lubricated by a mist or layer or moisture. This lessens any friction, does less damage to the skis, and allows the skier to go faster.
