Have you seen the clear plastic tables in stores and online recently? At first glance, one might think, "that's probably a cheap table". A closer look reveals these tables are usually extremely expensive! These tables are seen more like a piece of art rather than piece of furniture. Names of designers will often be associated with these tables as well, so you are often "buying the name".

The most popular, and cheapest, type of coffee table is the laminate or veneer finish coffee table. These are usually made from cheaper pine wood or particle wood. Manufacturers add a thin veneer over the frames to make it look like actual solid wood. Obviously this isn't the case, but they still can look very nice, for a very nice price. The down-side is how blemishes easily show up because dents and scratches punch right through the outer skin, showing up white.

A true wood coffee table has been most popular in the past and is very popular with designers today. Sure the veneer finish is popular, but word-workers and those with a little more money love the beauty and durability of a nice solid wood table. As these tables get used, they often take on a nice antique look. Some designers actually try to create this look by hammering and "dinging" up the wood. They will hit them with chains, hammers, other wood, and any other way to make a nice weathered look.

In conclusion, the veneer is by far the most popular design and the cheapest. So if you have budget constraints, then these can be a good choice. You can get cheap knock-offs of acrylic and solid wood designs, but they are few and far between and call for a lot of looking online and off.
